Scientists have developed light-activated drugs that restored light perception and visually guided behavior in blind mice, offering a potential non-invasive treatment for photoreceptor-loss diseases such as macular degeneration and retinitis pigmentosa. The study, published on August 28, 2026, in the Journal of the American Chemical Society, highlights the effectiveness of these photoswitchable small-molecule drugs, known as prosthe6 compounds. Administered as eye drops, these drugs enabled blind mice to perceive light without the need for gene therapy, implants, or specialized lighting. This breakthrough suggests a promising avenue for restoring vision in individuals affected by photoreceptor degeneration, potentially benefiting approximately 200 million people worldwide.
