Experimental Eye Drops Restore Vision in Blind Mice

Scientists at the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) have developed light-activated drugs that restored light perception in blind mice, offering a potential new treatment for degenerative blindness. These compounds, administered as eye drops, enabled the mice to perceive light and regain visually guided behaviors without the need for gene therapy, implants, or specialized lighting. The drugs work by activating surviving retinal cells, bypassing the need for functional photoreceptors. This approach could lead to simpler, more accessible treatments for conditions like age-related macular degeneration and retinitis pigmentosa, which affect approximately 200 million people worldwide. The findings were published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society (JACS).
