Beyond Blindness Camp Empowers Visually Impaired Students with Independence Skills

In July 2026, the Beyond Blindness Next Steps summer camp in Orange County provided ten visually impaired students, aged 10 to 23, with essential skills for independent living. The program included practical experiences such as navigating public transportation and understanding environmental cues. Participants learned to identify train tracks, interpret train patterns, and use the sun's position for orientation. Fourteen-year-old Jasmine Jaber from Irvine, who was born legally blind, expressed appreciation for the training, noting its importance for her future independence. The camp, now in its second year, was designed by Jacob Garcia, a teacher for the visually impaired, to address transportation challenges that often hinder individuals with visual impairments from achieving autonomy. Meredith Cagle, chief program officer at Beyond Blindness, highlighted that mastering these skills can open doors to education, employment, healthcare, and social opportunities, emphasizing the camp's role in building confidence for independent navigation.
