Visually Impaired Student Advocates for Inclusive Employment Opportunities

Millie Williams, a sixth-year student at Portobello High School in Edinburgh, is raising awareness about the challenges faced by visually impaired youth in securing work experience and employment. Diagnosed with Leber's congenital amaurosis at age five, Millie has encountered numerous obstacles due to employers' uncertainties about accommodating visual impairments. Determined to overcome these barriers, she secured a summer internship with Sight Scotland through the Career Ready program. Millie emphasizes the need for employers to better understand and support visually impaired individuals, stating that many young people with sight loss struggle to gain employment because employers are often unsure how to support them. Her experience highlights the importance of inclusive practices in the workplace to ensure equal opportunities for all.
