In recognition of World Blindness Awareness Month, Syracuse city staff and residents participated in the Blind Immersion Event organized by Aurora of Central New York. Participants navigated the mayor’s office blindfolded, using white canes to understand the daily barriers faced by the blind community. Syracuse Police Sgt. Thomas Blake noted the heightened reliance on other senses, stating, 'It’s amazing to think after being blindfolded how much more you are reliant upon both other people and the rest of your senses.' Aurora staff provided training on white cane basics and respectful assistance techniques. (spectrumlocalnews.com)
