New York Launches Home-Enabling Supports Program for Assistive Technology

The New York State Office for People With Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) has introduced the Home-Enabling Supports (HES) program to expand access to assistive technology for individuals living in uncertified community-based homes. Unlike traditional assistive technology benefits, the HES program streamlines planning and authorization, eliminating the need for bidding. Covered technologies include assistive devices that support independent living, such as smart locks and fall detection sensors, as well as remote support tools like emergency call buttons and two-way video systems. This initiative aims to reduce reliance on in-home and community-based staff, promoting greater independence for individuals with developmental disabilities.
