Detroit's Blind Voters Face Persistent Challenges with Malfunctioning Voting Machines
Source: WDIV Local 4
Blind voters in Detroit are encountering significant obstacles due to malfunctioning Voter Assist Terminals (VATs), devices designed to facilitate independent voting for individuals with disabilities. Reports indicate that these machines frequently fail to power up, produce inaudible audio, or lack essential accessories like headphones. Such technical issues have transformed a process that typically takes minutes into an hours-long ordeal, discouraging many from voting independently. Advocates Stephen Handschu and Richard Clay emphasize that these malfunctions infringe upon their civil rights by preventing private and autonomous voting. They are urging Detroit officials to address and rectify these issues before the upcoming election. In response, City Council members have committed to investigating and resolving these concerns to ensure accessible voting for all citizens.
