Ebony Wingate, a 49-year-old legally blind woman, was tragically killed on October 2, 2026, after being struck by a Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) city bus on North Graham Street in Charlotte, North Carolina. Wingate, who had approximately 20% vision and relied on public transportation, was disembarking from the bus when she entered the street and was hit. She died at the scene. The bus driver was not charged with a crime. Attorneys are now seeking to file a wrongful death lawsuit against CATS and the city of Charlotte on behalf of Wingate's family. This incident raises concerns about the safety measures in place for visually impaired individuals using public transportation and the need for enhanced protocols to prevent such tragedies.
