AER Launches Low Vision Therapy Professional Division

The Association for Education and Rehabilitation of the Blind and Visually Impaired (AER) has announced the formation of a dedicated Low Vision Therapy Professional Division. This new division aims to support the integrity and development of low vision therapy, ensuring it advances within the realm of blindness and low vision support services.
Purpose and Focus
The division will cater to the professional and educational needs of AER members, particularly those holding ACVREP Certified Low Vision Therapist (CLVT) credentials. The division also welcomes associate members who are not CLVT-certified. Members will have access to resources that address critical policy issues and professional development.
CLVTs perform detailed evaluations covering various aspects of vision and related skills. These include assessments of visual acuity, visual fields, contrast sensitivity, color vision, stereopsis, visual-perceptual skills, literacy, work and educational performance, and daily living activities. They also guide clients in using low vision devices and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams.
Division's Role
The division is set to become a cornerstone for various aspects of low vision services. It will intersect with clinical services, assistive technology, education, employment, and independent living disciplines, providing comprehensive support to clients of all ages.
Moreover, this division will advise the AER Board on matters concerning CLVT practice, standards, and workforce development, staying ahead of the evolving needs of the community.
This initiative positions the division uniquely at the intersection of clinical, technological, and educational spheres, focused on enhancing the quality of life and independence for those with low vision challenges.
