Meta Provides Free Smart Glasses to Over 130,000 Blind U.S. Veterans

Meta has announced a significant initiative to distribute free smart glasses to every legally blind U.S. veteran, totaling over 130,000 individuals. This program aims to enhance the independence and daily functioning of blind veterans by leveraging advanced wearable technology. In collaboration with the Blinded Veterans Association and TechSoup, Meta will offer comprehensive hands-on training for each recipient. The training includes a detailed guide, monthly webinars accessible to all participants, and in-person events nationwide to ensure effective utilization of the devices. This initiative was championed by U.S. Army veteran Don Overton, who lost his sight during the Gulf War. Overton expressed that using smart glasses restored his sense of independence. Meta's Chief Technology Officer, Andrew Bosworth, emphasized the company's commitment to supporting those who have served, stating, “These veterans sacrificed their sight in service to our country. Giving them technology that can meaningfully navigate the world around them is a profound honor for us and underscores the importance of why we build.”
