macOS Golden Gate: Essential Updates for Blind and Low Vision Users

Apple has released macOS 27 Golden Gate, focusing on accessibility updates crucial for blind, DeafBlind, and low vision users. While mainstream features aren't covered here, Voice of the Blind will highlight the essential changes you need to know about.

VoiceOver and Braille Enhancements

Improved Image and Screen Descriptions: VoiceOver now leverages Apple Intelligence to describe images and screens. By focusing on an image and pressing VO-Shift-L, descriptions become accessible. Additional options are available with VO-Shift-R, including spatial exploration and screen descriptions. This upgrade, however, won't interact with elements like VOCR on iOS.

New Verbosity Options for Coding: Golden Gate introduces customized reporting of line numbers, errors, and warnings in code editors such as Xcode. These settings, found in the 'Coding' tab under VoiceOver Utility > Verbosity, may vary in compatibility with other editors.

Actions Rotor for Trackpad Users: Users can perform custom actions via the trackpad. By enabling trackpad commands and turning the rotor to "Actions," users can swipe to select and activate actions by double-tapping.

'Ducking Amount' Setting: Borrowing from iOS 18, this setting determines how much other audio is lowered when VoiceOver speaks. Find it in VoiceOver Utility > Sound.

Braille Improvements: Though untested, improvements include text field labels in braille and support for text (txt) and PDF files, similar to iOS 27.

Low Vision User Enhancements

Accessibility Reader now allows content to be summarized and translated without losing original formatting. This change aligns macOS with iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 capabilities.
