Engineers at Harvard's John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences have developed 'Mobilio,' a smartphone app designed to assist individuals with blindness or low vision in navigation. The app combines machine learning, built-in sensors, and personalized audio cues to provide turn-by-turn directions, path guidance, and obstacle avoidance. In early tests, users equipped with Mobilio and a cane navigated faster and encountered significantly fewer obstacles compared to those using Google Maps and a cane. This innovation aims to enhance independent mobility for the visually impaired community.
