Guide Dogs Launches 'First Hello' Pilot to Create 3D-Printed Ultrasound Models for Parents with Sight Loss

Guide Dogs has initiated the 'First Hello' pilot program, transforming traditional 20-week pregnancy scans into 3D-printed models for parents and grandparents with sight loss. This initiative allows those unable to see ultrasound images to physically feel the contours of their unborn child. The charity emphasizes that individuals with sight loss are often excluded from significant life moments that others take for granted. As part of the pilot, approximately 50 bespoke tactile sonograms will be available to the public. Kerry Bevan, head of support services at Guide Dogs, stated, 'Every parent, grandparent, and loved one deserves to experience the joy of early parenting milestones.' Expectant father Reece Finnegan-Knight, who received a tactile sonogram, shared, 'Holding the tactile scan for the very first time was an incredible experience.' This pilot aims to make pregnancy milestones more inclusive for the visually impaired community.
