Every year, 1 October marks the International Day of Older Persons, shining a light on the importance of creating inclusive societies that honor the dignity and autonomy of older individuals. As part of this observance, the International Council for Education of People with Visual Impairment (ICEVI) and the World Blind Union (WBU) are showcasing the pivotal role of Braille in empowering older persons.
Braille serves as a vital tool, ensuring that individuals with vision impairments can maintain independence and actively participate in their communities. This year’s campaign emphasizes the need to include older persons in this technological landscape, promoting literacy and learning opportunities regardless of age.
Voice of the Blind believes that enhancing Braille literacy among older adults can significantly improve their quality of life. By making educational resources accessible, older persons can continue to engage deeply with their environments, expressing themselves and enriching their daily experiences.
To truly build an inclusive society, it’s crucial to recognize the ongoing potential and contributions of older adults. The Global Braille Literacy Campaign highlights how essential this kind of accessibility and inclusion is for the well-being of older persons worldwide.
Access to Braille—and, by extension, information—reflects a society’s commitment to supporting members at all life stages. This International Day of Older Persons, we’re reminded that fostering such environments is not only a necessity but a responsibility.
