Camp Abilities Empowers Visually Impaired Athletes in Brockport

The 31st annual Camp Abilities commenced this week in Brockport, New York, offering a barrier-free sports environment for young athletes who are blind, visually impaired, or deafblind. This year, 43 campers are participating in one-on-one instruction across various activities, including tandem biking, paddle boarding, and track and field. Founder Lauren Lieberman emphasized the camp's mission to provide a space where children can compete, learn, and take risks without facing barriers. Notably, about 20% of the coaches this year are former campers themselves, highlighting the program's lasting impact. Since its inception, Camp Abilities has inspired similar programs nationwide and internationally, fostering inclusive sports opportunities for visually impaired youth.
