Berkeley Teen Triumphs in National Braille Challenge Finals

Kai Wang, a 13-year-old seventh grader from Berkeley, California, has achieved a remarkable victory in the national Braille Challenge Finals held in Los Angeles. Competing against 50 participants nationwide, Kai secured first place in the 'Charts and Graphs' category. The Braille Challenge is an esteemed competition that evaluates the reading, comprehension, and writing skills of students who are blind or visually impaired. Despite the increasing reliance on technology, Kai emphasizes the enduring significance of braille literacy. He believes that braille is crucial for learning various subjects, including math, science, and music, and values the opportunity to connect with others who share his passion for braille. Notably, Kai is the first braille-only student to enroll in Berkeley public schools in decades, attending Longview Middle School.
