Indiana Students Develop 'AuralVision' Wearable Device to Aid Visually Impaired Navigation

A team of engineering students from Indiana has developed 'AuralVision,' a wearable device designed to assist blind and visually impaired individuals in detecting obstacles. The device utilizes sensors and haptic feedback to provide real-time navigation support. Initially conceived by Rose-Hulman graduate John Marum, the project evolved from smart glasses to a baseball cap design after user feedback. Sensors are embedded in the cap's brim, and vibrations indicate the direction of obstacles. Operating offline with a 12-hour battery life, 'AuralVision' aims to supplement traditional mobility aids like canes and guide dogs. Feedback from visually impaired residents highlighted the need for customizable vibration patterns to reduce distraction. While still a prototype, the developers hope further testing will lead to a market-ready product that enhances independent mobility for the visually impaired.
