The Orbit Player, a modern media device designed for the blind and visually impaired, now features Amazon Alexa integration. Announced by Orbit Research in collaboration with the Xavier’s Resource Centre for the Visually Challenged (XRCVC), St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai, the update allows users to interact with Alexa through tactile controls and voice commands.
Functioning as more than just a book and media player, the Orbit Player's integration with Alexa offers expanded access to information, media, and services such as Audible audiobooks, Kindle content, podcasts, and news. The familiar button-based interface, combined with Orbit’s screen reader, makes navigating Alexa’s features intuitive for non-visual use.
Dr. Sam Taraporevala, Executive Director, XRCVC, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership: “Orbit Player’s potential has grown immensely with the inclusion of Alexa. It empowers users in learning, work, and recreation.”
Venkatesh Chari, President and CEO of Orbit Research, stated, “Our aim was to merge purpose-built accessibility with mainstream tech. Alexa aligns perfectly with this vision, offering a blend of familiarity and intuitive design.”
Existing users will receive the Alexa feature via an over-the-air update starting October 12, 2026. While the app is available on an as-is basis, Orbit Research does not provide technical support for third-party apps.
